about

Half this album was recorded Aug 30 - Sep 1 2021 during a three day Amtrak trip from Everett, WA to Chicago, IL. The rest of the recordings were made at home over the last year. The train ride is one I've done many times over the years to visit family (I don't care much for flying). This marked possibly the last time I'll take that train ride as the trip concluded with me driving a rental truck with all my mom's belongings back out west so she can settle out here close to me, and leaving no Champlins in Illinois for me to visit. It's a trip and I haven't fully wrapped my head around it all. That last visit to Illinois was full of nostalgia and reflection. On the train I brought a pile of musical ideas in my head, an OP-1 portable synthesizer, a guitar, and I was able to record 6 songs (there's actually more but they didn't make the cut). I had thought to make this an all train album, and half-joked about calling it "Devin Champlin's Last Ride" in a sort of tribute to Jimmie Rodger's song "Hobo Bill's Last Ride". I ultimately decided to fill out the album with other recordings I had been making and now here you have the result. If you're curious, the train songs were: Why Not Minot, Smoke Stop, Malta, Woldtveldt Agency, Glacier East, and Driftless. I got a sleeper car so I could make noise and get into the zone without bugging anyone.

Instruments played: OP-1, Nord Lead, MicroKorg, MPC500, Farfisa Compact, Korg Minilogue, 1967 Guild M-20
